Why two suits is the real Spider lesson
One-suit Spider teaches the gestures: build down, lift a suited run, deal ten more cards. Two-suit Spider teaches the actual game. Half the cards are one colour family and half the other, so almost every convenient link is a mixed-suit trap. You can place a heart six on a spade seven, but those two cards will not travel together until you separate them again.
That single rule change is why Online Solitaire and other classic tables give two-suit Spider its own page. Players searching for a middle difficulty need a clear door — not a toggle buried after they already bounced.
Rules that matter on this table
The tableau still has ten columns and five stock deals. Foundations still want eight king-to-ace suited runs. Building remains rank-based regardless of suit. Moving several cards at once still requires a same-suit descending sequence.
What changes is the density of bad glue. In one suit, every descending pair is already packed. In two suits, you must decide whether a mixed placement is worth a reveal, and whether you can afford the empty-column work to undo it later.
| Habit | One suit | Two suits |
|---|---|---|
| Grab any legal down-build | Usually fine | Often creates immovable glue |
| Empty column | Useful | Often decisive |
| Early stock deal | Mild risk | Can bury your only unpack path |
A practical plan for two-suit openings
Reveal first. A move that turns a facedown card is usually better than a cosmetic tidy. When two reveals are equal, choose the same-suit destination so you grow a movable unit.
Guard empty space. Filling the first empty column with a stranded king can freeze the whole deal. Park temporary cards only when you can name the exit move.
Before each stock deal, scan for one more suited transfer. The deal will drop a card on every column; fragile mixed towers become expensive the moment they are covered.
Climb when you are ready
When two-suit clearances feel routine, open four-suit Spider. If the board still feels noisy, return to one-suit for a confidence reset. All three tables stay free, quiet, and resumable on Felt & Wood.
