How a move works

Memory is a matching game built from pairs of identical pictures. This board contains 16 face-down cards representing eight pairs. Select one card to reveal it, then select a different face-down card. If the pictures match, the pair stays visible and is removed from further decisions. If they differ, both cards turn face down again. The game ends when all eight pairs have been found.

A move is counted after two cards have been selected, not after every individual flip. There is no opponent stealing pairs here, so the objective is efficiency: finish in as few moves as your information allows. Randomness controls the initial layout, but nearly every repeated miss after a card has been seen is avoidable.

The cards remain in fixed positions throughout a game. That means Memory is not a test of remembering a list in order. It is a test of maintaining associations between picture and place while the visible board changes.

Scanning, encoding, and recall tactics

Scan in a consistent order

Early flips are information gathering. Choose unseen cards in a predictable route—left to right across each row, clockwise around the edge, or by numbered grid coordinates. A system reduces the mental effort of remembering where you have already searched.

Random jumping creates two problems: cards are easier to confuse, and you may select a previously seen position while believing it is new. A regular scan gives every card an address. “Grapes at row two, column three” is more durable than “grapes somewhere near the middle.”

Do not stare at the picture alone. When a card appears, deliberately note both its identity and location. Briefly say the association internally: “lemon, top right.” This tiny act of naming is more reliable than hoping a visual impression remains.

Use the first and second flips differently

The first flip of a move should create the best chance of a match. If you know a pair, select it. If you do not, reveal an unknown card. Once the first picture is visible, the second flip becomes a decision:

  • If you remember its partner, take the match.
  • If the partner has never appeared, choose another unknown card.
  • If you know the first card is a duplicate of a location but cannot recall which one, pause and reconstruct the board before guessing.

The second flip is especially valuable because it can connect new information to a known card. Suppose your first flip reveals a new peach and your second reveals a lemon whose partner you remember. The move misses, but you now know the peach and should lock its address into memory before the cards hide.

Match known pairs before they compete for attention

Every unresolved known pair adds to your mental load. Clearing it simplifies the board and prevents that information from being displaced by new pictures. If you can name both locations confidently, take the pair rather than continuing to explore for no reason.

There is one useful exception: after flipping a new first card, you may discover that it is not part of a known pair. The second flip should normally remain unknown, even if an unrelated known pair exists elsewhere; you cannot complete that unrelated pair in the same move. Explore once, then collect known pairs on following moves.

Build a spatial story

Different memory cues work for different players. Grid coordinates are precise: row three, column one. Relative cues are faster for some people: “berry below apple,” or “two melons on opposite corners.” Distinctive mini-stories can help when pictures feel similar: “the lemon sits beside the grapes.”

Use one primary method rather than switching constantly. For a small board, chunking by rows is effective. Mentally replay each row from left to right, including unknown positions as blanks. As pairs disappear, keep addresses tied to the original grid; do not renumber the remaining cards.

Reconstruct instead of guessing

When recall feels uncertain, pause before the second flip. Review the cards shown in the last few moves, then inspect the unmatched visible positions in your mental map. Context often retrieves a location that direct effort cannot.

If two positions are plausible, choose an unseen card unless one candidate is strongly more likely. A wrong flip on an unseen card still gains information. A wrong flip on an already known card often teaches nothing and creates the same uncertainty again.

Use elimination late in the game

The final cards require less memory than the opening because matched pairs are gone. If six of eight pairs have been removed, every remaining image must occur in the four covered positions. Even if you forgot one exact location, known identities can force the answer.

Count unknown positions, not merely unknown pictures. When only two face-down cards remain, they must match. With four cards, remembering one pair determines the other automatically. Slow down near the end; an unnecessary guess is especially costly when all required information is available.

Mistakes that waste moves and blur locations

Flipping cards without a search pattern. Unstructured exploration wastes moves and blurs locations. Pick a route through unseen cards and resume it after every successful match.

Remembering the picture but not the place. Recognition is not enough. Attach each image to a row and column or a stable neighbour the moment it appears.

Choosing a known card first without knowing its partner. This often forces a blind second flip. Prefer an unknown first card; it may match something already stored in memory.

Ignoring the second card of a miss. Players often focus on why the first card failed and barely encode the second. Keep both cards in view mentally before they turn down.

Exploring while several pairs are already known. Uncollected pairs increase cognitive load. Clear certain matches, simplify the board, then continue scanning.

Renumbering positions after matches disappear. The physical grid has not changed. Keep the original row-and-column addresses throughout the game.

Clicking quickly when uncertain. Memory retrieval benefits from a short pause. Reconstruct recent moves and use elimination before accepting a low-information guess.
